Talking Early Years: Celebrating 120 Years at LEYF
The Year That is 2023 – This year, we are proud to celebrate 120 years of LEYF. It’s been fascinating to reflect back on what has changed over…
February 1st 2023
Ten years ago, the Princess of Wales started noticing that a poor Early Years’ experience was the common denominator across all the young people using the mental health charities she supported. Consequently, she committed to focusing on the Early Years.
Since then the Princess developed the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood and committed to raising the importance of the Early Years and our responsibility as a society to make children’s childhoods the best. Her research in 2019 found that only 17% of the public knew the importance of the Early Years.
This week the Royal Foundation turned their energy into “Shaping Us”, a crucial new awareness-raising campaign to increase public understanding of the importance of the first five years of a child’s life. The Princess of Wales will be at the forefront of this campaign, which aims to shine a light on how the first five years lays the foundations for the rest of a child’s life.
Part of LEYF’s purpose as a social enterprise is to ensure that all children get access to high quality Early Years education, so by supporting this campaign we hope to put our values into practise, and encourage everyone to do the same. In a speech for the launch of this initiative, the Princess said:
…it is essential, to not only understand the unique importance of our earliest years, but to know what we can all do to help raise future generations of happy, healthy adults.
…and we couldn’t agree more! Now is the time to build collaboration and prepare the way for our global citizens.
