Understanding weaning: first steps to solid food

Moving from milk to solid foods is exciting but can also be daunting. Here's a guide to help you approach this new chapter in your baby's life.

Weaning is an exciting milestone for you and your baby. It’s the gradual process of moving from milk to solid foods, starting at around 6 months of age, when milk alone no longer meets your baby’s nutritional needs.

Is your baby ready for solid foods?

Every baby is different, but most are ready to begin weaning when they can:

  • Stay in a sitting position and support their own head.
  • Coordinate their hands, eyes, and mouth (for example, looking at food, picking it up, and putting it in their mouth).
  • Swallow food (rather than spitting it straight back out).

These signs show that your baby’s body is ready to take the next step.

Why weaning matters

Weaning isn’t just about nutrition. It’s also a big step in your baby’s development. It helps your child:

  • Learn to chew and bite.
  • Get used to different textures.
  • Explore new tastes, which can help set healthy habits for life.

How LEYF supports weaning

We’re here to make weaning a smooth and positive experience for you and your child. We start with a conversation to understand where your baby is on their weaning journey. From there, we introduce our specially designed LEYF weaning menu. The menu is tailored to support your baby through each stage of weaning, offering a variety of flavours and textures to encourage healthy eating and development. We work closely with you to ensure your baby’s needs are met every step of the way.
