Monkey Puzzle storytime
Watch along with this classic tale and learn some new Makaton signs
Get comfortable and listen to LEYF teacher, Ricky, read the children’s classic, Monkey Puzzle, by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.
This story is a real favourite with children at the nursery and has inspired lots of fun, creative activities you can try at home with your pre-school child.
You can try making a puppet crown featuring Little Monkey and Butterfly to help re-tell the story as the two main characters.
The story is also a great opportunity for the children to learn some new Makaton signs for all the animals featured in the story, such as a frog, an elephant and a bat.
Makaton is a signing system to support young children’s communication development, which is used widely at LEYF.
It is an effective communication tool to enable children to express themselves through gestures and supports them to learn some of the vital basics of communication.
Makaton is designed to be used alongside speech and many children will continue to use the signs even when they have learned to talk. By using the signs along with speech, young children develop a deeper understanding of the words they are learning.
